Written Movie Review - Planes, Trains and Automobiles

By: Lyvalian

Planes, Trains & Automobiles, without a doubt one of the finest and funniest movies of the 80’s. It was directed by John Hughes and it stars, the late great John Candy and Steve Martin. However, what makes this movie so funny, magical and heartwarming is that there are just so many laugh out loud moments, and moments never to be forgotten.

Steve Martin is Neal Page, and he is on a business trip in New York. It’s nearly Thanksgiving, and Neal’s plan is simple. Leave the office, jump in a cab and get on the first plane back home to Chicago. But things don’t go according to plan, far from it. First, Neal’s meeting with his boss is running late. Finally, when he does get out of the meeting, there are no cabs to be found. Then, as luck would have it, Neal catches a break. Theres a cab, but unfortunately, he’s not the only one who wants it. This is where things really go bad for Neal, why, well……………….

Enter Del Griffith (John Candy). While Neal and another man are making a deal about who gets the above cab, Del simply takes it lol. Yup, simply gets in the back and away he goes. Del is a salesman, in the shower and curtain ring division. He’s married to Marie but he and Marie don’t have any children. From here on these two men, Neal and Del are destined to meet again, and wouldn’t you know it, they do. What follows is one of the funniest and most error prone (mostly Del’s fault lol) adventures ever, as we follow these two men as they try to make it home in time for Thanksgiving.

This is my favourite John Hughes movie, and one of the funniest and finest of the 80’s. There are moments in this movie that just so, so funny and some really touching moments (we find out why Del always only talks about Marie, but never phones her). And also, not to mention, some really unforgettable moments, one in particular involving two trucks and the end result, simply unforgettable. A movie you will never forget with characters larger than life, and one of the finest John Hughes movies ever.
